Flights to Cancún
One of the shortest international beach trips from the US
Cancún is close enough to much of the US to work as a long weekend, and that proximity is its main advantage over other Caribbean options. From Florida and Texas it is a short flight rather than a long-haul commitment.
The season you travel in matters more here than in most places, because the rainy and hurricane months overlap with the cheapest fares. That is a real trade-off rather than a technicality.
Getting to Cancún
Airports
Cancún International (CUN) serves the whole region, including onward travel to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is one of the busiest airports in Latin America and arrivals halls can be crowded.
Flight time
Around 2 hours from Miami or Houston, roughly 4 from New York, and about 5 to 6 from Los Angeles.
Into the city
The hotel zone is around 20 to 40 minutes from the airport depending where along the strip you are staying. Pre-arranged transfers and the airport bus are both straightforward; agreeing the price before you get in a vehicle is the standard advice and worth following.

Peak and driest
December to April
The reliable window for weather, and priced accordingly. March adds spring break, which changes the atmosphere considerably in parts of the hotel zone.
Shoulder
May and November
Warmer and more humid than winter but generally still dry, with softer pricing at both ends of the peak.
Cheapest, with a caveat
June to October
This is both the rainy season and the Atlantic hurricane season. Fares and resort rates fall substantially, and the risk of disruption is real rather than theoretical.

Worth sorting before you fly
Price travel insurance if you go in hurricane season
Between June and November, cover that actually pays out for weather disruption is worth understanding properly rather than assuming. Read what triggers a claim before you buy.
Seaweed varies through spring and summer
Sargassum can affect beaches roughly between April and August and varies by year and by stretch of coast. Recent reports for the specific beach matter more than a general forecast.
All-inclusive is not automatically the cheaper option
It works well if you intend to stay put, and poorly if you plan to eat out and take day trips. Work out which trip you are taking before choosing the board basis.
Paying in pesos usually costs less
Dollar prices at resorts and shops often carry an unfavourable conversion. Where you have the choice, the local currency is generally better value.

Is it risky to book Cancún during hurricane season?
It is a genuine trade-off rather than a reason not to go. Most trips between June and October are unaffected beyond some afternoon rain, and the savings are significant. What changes the calculation is how much flexibility you have: if your dates cannot move and the trip is a one-off occasion, the cheaper months carry a risk worth pricing insurance against. We would rather set that out plainly than talk you into either answer.
How far is the hotel zone from the airport?
Between about 20 and 40 minutes, depending how far along the strip your hotel sits. Playa del Carmen is around an hour, and Tulum closer to two. It is worth checking the actual transfer time for your specific hotel before booking, because the difference between the near and far ends of the zone is real when you are arriving late.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
Not in the hotel zone or at the airport, where English is widely spoken. Away from the tourist areas it becomes more useful, and a small amount is appreciated everywhere. It is not a barrier to the trip.
