One vast terminal, a satellite reached by train, and traffic worth avoiding
Suvarnabhumi is a single enormous terminal building, which sounds simple until you walk it. The concourses radiate a long way from the centre, and the newer satellite terminal is far enough out that it needs an automated train to reach.
Bangkok's traffic is the other planning factor. The Airport Rail Link is not glamorous but it removes the single biggest variable in getting into the city, which on a bad afternoon can turn a forty-minute drive into a great deal more.
Terminals and how they connect
Main terminal, concourses A to G
One building with concourses radiating from a central area. The walks are long — reaching a far concourse takes a genuine fifteen to twenty minutes.
Satellite Terminal 1
Opened in 2023 to add gate capacity, reached from the main terminal by an automated people mover taking a few minutes.
Getting between them
The people mover connects the main terminal and the satellite airside and runs frequently. Everything is within one secure area, so no re-screening is involved.
Don Mueang is a separate airport
Bangkok's second airport handles most low-cost traffic. It is a long road journey from Suvarnabhumi and the two are not connected airside in any way.
Getting into Bangkok
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.

About 30 minutes to Phaya Thai
From the station beneath the terminal, connecting to the BTS Skytrain network. Cheap, immune to traffic, and by a wide margin the most predictable option.
Taxi
40 minutes to well over 90
Metered with an airport surcharge and inexpensive, but the time range is enormous because Bangkok's congestion is severe and unpredictable. Fine late at night, risky in the afternoon.
Connecting through BKK
Suvarnabhumi handles connections well within its single secure area, including transfers to the satellite terminal by people mover. The real cost is walking distance rather than process. The itinerary to avoid is one that connects between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, which means a long road transfer across the city on separate tickets, with all the risk that implies.

Never connect between Bangkok's two airports on separate tickets
Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are a long, traffic-dependent drive apart. If the first flight is late, nobody is responsible and you buy a new ticket.
The rail link beats a taxi in the afternoon
A taxi is cheap and comfortable, but Bangkok traffic makes the journey time genuinely unpredictable. For a flight you cannot miss, take the train.
Allow for the walk to your gate
The concourses extend a long way from the centre and the satellite needs a train. Twenty minutes from the central area to a far gate is realistic.
Terminal assignments, transit timetables and fares all change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip with the airport or transport operator before you travel.

BKK is outside the United States, so the US Department of Transportation rules we publish do not govern a departure from here on their own — they reach your itinerary when it touches the US. We have not built the local regime for this country, and we will not describe rights we have not read. If your itinerary departs the EU, EU 261 is the instrument to look up; from the UK it is the retained version enforced by the CAA, which pays in sterling rather than euros. Both are more generous than the US floor rather than less.
Stated plainly because the alternative is worse: a page that quoted a § 259.5 commitment at somebody departing Bangkok would be inventing a right they do not have, and they would find that out at the desk.
