Inside the city, which makes arrivals easy and departures noisy
La Aurora is one of the few international airports genuinely inside its capital city. The runway sits within Guatemala City itself, which means arrival transfers are measured in minutes rather than the hour that most Central American capitals require.
Most international traffic here is to and from the United States, concentrated on Houston, Miami, Los Angeles and New York, and it is largely family travel. The other major flow is tourism heading straight through the city to Antigua and Lake Atitlán.

One passenger terminal with separated arrival and departure levels. Immigration and customs for international arrivals are here. The building is compact and the walk from gate to exit is short.
Getting into Guatemala City
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Authorised taxi
10–25 minutes to Zona Viva or Zona 1
The airport is within the city, so most destinations are genuinely close. Use the official desk inside the terminal rather than accepting an approach in the arrivals hall.
Shuttle or private transfer to Antigua
60–90 minutes
Antigua is the destination for a large share of arriving visitors, and shared shuttles run frequently from the airport. Pre-booking is worthwhile, particularly on a late arrival.
Transfer to Lake Atitlán
3–4 hours
A long road journey on mountain roads. This is best arranged in advance, and best not attempted after dark.
Connecting through GUA
Guatemala City handles some regional connections but is primarily a point-to-point airport. Onward flights within Central America exist but frequencies are limited, so a delay can mean a long wait rather than the next departure.
Worth knowing before you fly
Most visitors do not stay in the city
Antigua, roughly an hour away, is where the majority of leisure travellers head. Arranging a shuttle at the point of booking your flight is simpler than sorting it out in the arrivals hall.
Avoid arriving after dark if you are heading to the lake
The road to Lake Atitlán is mountainous and winding. Drivers generally prefer not to run it at night, and a daytime arrival makes the whole trip easier.
The airport's location has a downside
Being inside the city means noise restrictions and limited room for growth, and it means traffic around the airport perimeter at peak times. The convenience is real, but leave a margin for departures.
