Thirty-five kilometres and a mountain between the airport and the city
Medellín has two airports and they are nothing alike. José María Córdova, coded MDE, is the international airport, and it is not in Medellín — it is near Rionegro, some thirty-five kilometres away and considerably higher, reached by a road that climbs out of the valley.
The other, Olaya Herrera, sits inside the city and handles small regional aircraft. Almost every visitor arrives at the first and wants to be near the second, so the transfer is the defining feature of arriving here.

Getting into Medellín
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Authorised taxi
45–75 minutes to El Poblado
A fixed-rate journey from the official rank. The road descends into the Aburrá valley and traffic near the city can add substantially at peak times.
Shared airport minibus
60–90 minutes
A much cheaper collective service running into the city. It waits to fill and makes stops, so it trades time for money.
Ride-hailing
45–75 minutes
Available and usually cheaper than the fixed-rate taxi, though pickup arrangements at the airport have varied.
Connecting through MDE
Medellín handles some domestic connections but is mainly a point-to-point airport for international traffic. If you are connecting to a regional flight, check carefully whether it departs from MDE or from Olaya Herrera in the city, because a transfer between the two is over an hour.
Worth knowing before you fly
MDE and EOH are different airports
José María Córdova (MDE) is the international airport near Rionegro. Olaya Herrera (EOH) is the small airport inside Medellín used for regional flights. They are around an hour apart, and confusing them is a serious problem on a connection.
The airport is cooler than the city
Rionegro sits higher than Medellín and is noticeably cooler. Medellín's reputation for perfect weather applies to the valley rather than to the airport, so expect a change on the drive down.
Budget the transfer into your arrival day
Between the flight, immigration and an hour on the road, arriving in Medellín takes longer than the flight time suggests. Scheduling anything for the first evening after an afternoon arrival is optimistic.
Terminal assignments, transit timetables and fares all change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip with the airport or transport operator before you travel.

MDE is outside the United States, so the US Department of Transportation rules we publish do not govern a departure from here on their own — they reach your itinerary when it touches the US. We have not built the local regime for this country, and we will not describe rights we have not read. If your itinerary departs the EU, EU 261 is the instrument to look up; from the UK it is the retained version enforced by the CAA, which pays in sterling rather than euros. Both are more generous than the US floor rather than less.
Stated plainly because the alternative is worse: a page that quoted a § 259.5 commitment at somebody departing Medellín would be inventing a right they do not have, and they would find that out at the desk.
