The quieter way into the Yucatán, and much closer to the ruins than Cancún
Mérida is the capital of Yucatán state and a considerably calmer entry point to the region than Cancún. For travellers whose interest is the colonial towns, the cenotes and the archaeological sites rather than a beach resort, arriving here removes several hours of driving.
The airport is small, the arrival process is quick, and the city centre is close. It has grown steadily as Mérida itself has, but it remains a straightforward airport by any standard.

Single terminal
One compact building handling domestic flights and a modest number of international services, mostly to the United States. Immigration and customs are quick relative to the larger Mexican airports simply because the volumes are lower.
Getting into Mérida
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.

Fixed price by zone from a booth inside the terminal. The city centre is genuinely close, which makes this the default for most arrivals.
Ride-hailing

Available in Mérida and usually cheaper than the fixed-fare taxi, with pickup from a designated area.
Car rental
Immediate, then 15–25 minutes
Worth considering, because the reason to fly into Mérida is usually to explore the wider Yucatán. Roads in the state are good and distances are manageable. The same Mexican liability insurance requirement applies as elsewhere in the country.
Connecting through MID
Almost entirely a point-to-point airport. Domestic connections route through Mexico City, and international connections generally mean a US hub. Frequencies are moderate rather than high, so a disruption here takes longer to recover from than at a major hub.
Worth knowing before you fly
Closer to Chichén Itzá than Cancún is
The main archaeological site is roughly ninety minutes to two hours from Mérida by road, against three hours or more from Cancún. If ruins rather than beaches are the point of the trip, this is the more sensible airport.
The Tren Maya serves the region
The railway connecting points across the Yucatán peninsula has stations in the region and has changed how travel between Mérida, Cancún and the interior works. Services and timetables have been evolving since opening, so check the current position rather than relying on an older account.
Heat and humidity are the main constraint
Mérida is consistently hot, and the period from May through September is genuinely demanding. Sightseeing is best done early in the day rather than in the afternoon.

How far is Mérida airport from the city?
