A large newer building opened in stages between 2019 and 2022, adding around twenty gates and substantially increasing capacity. The hub carrier's operation centres here.
Moving between them
The two terminals are joined airside by a pedestrian connector, with a free landside shuttle as an alternative. That airside link is the important detail: a terminal change on a connecting itinerary does not require re-clearing security, which is why connection times here are shorter than the airport's general international standard would suggest.
Getting into Panama City
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Metro (Line 2 spur to Aeropuerto)
About an hour to downtown including the transfer
A metro station serves the airport on a Line 2 spur. Reaching the centre means changing to Line 1, and the total is around an hour. The fare is negligible — Panama uses the US dollar and the metro costs well under a dollar — which makes this remarkable value if you have the time.
Taxi
25–40 minutes to central Panama City
Straightforward and the usual choice for a short visit. Agree the fare or use the official desk rather than leaving it open.
Connecting through PTY
The hub airline schedules connections here at around ninety minutes on average, and files shorter minimums than the airport's general standard because the transfer stays airside within a connected complex. For a connection between two unrelated airlines, or where you must collect and re-check bags, treat it as a normal international transfer and allow considerably more. On a single ticket through the hub, a ninety-minute gap is a designed connection rather than a gamble.
Worth knowing before you fly
You usually do not clear immigration to connect
On a straightforward airside transfer there is no customs or immigration formality and bags go through to your final destination. Some nationalities need a transit visa for Panama regardless, which depends on your passport rather than your itinerary, so confirm it before booking.
The stopover is free and generous
The hub carrier allows a stop in Panama of up to fifteen days at no additional airfare, booked through the multi-city or stopover option rather than as two tickets. If Panama holds any interest, this is by far the cheapest way to see it.
Six hours is the threshold for leaving
Below about six hours, stay airside. The round trip to the city is roughly ninety minutes of travel plus re-screening on return, which eats a shorter layover without leaving time to see anything.
The airport runs around the clock
Panama's location and weather allow twenty-four hour operation, and the connecting banks include overnight ones. An arrival or departure at an unsociable hour here is normal rather than a scheduling accident.

If your itinerary departs the EU, EU 261 is the instrument to look up; from the UK it is the retained version enforced by the CAA, which pays in sterling rather than euros. Both are more generous than the US floor rather than less.
