Punta Cana is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and one of the busiest in the Caribbean, serving the resort strip along the country's eastern coast. It is unusual to look at: the terminals are open-sided with thatched palm roofs rather than sealed air-conditioned boxes, which makes the arrival memorable and the queues warm.
It is privately built and operated, and it works efficiently for what it is — a high-volume leisure airport where most passengers are heading to an all-inclusive resort within half an hour.
Terminals and how they connect
Open-air terminals
Several terminal buildings handle international arrivals and departures, distinguished mainly by which airlines use them. The open-sided design means the terminals are not air-conditioned in the way most airports are, which is worth knowing if you face a long queue on a hot afternoon.
Getting into Punta Cana
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Pre-booked resort transfer
15–35 minutes to most Bávaro and Punta Cana resorts
Almost universal here, and frequently bundled into a package booking. The driver meets you outside the arrivals area.
Authorised taxi
15–35 minutes
Fixed rates by zone. More expensive than a pre-booked transfer for the same journey in most cases.
Transfer to Uvero Alto or Miches
45–90 minutes
The resorts further north along the coast are a longer drive. Check where your hotel actually is rather than assuming everything described as Punta Cana is close to the airport.
Connecting through PUJ
Primarily a destination airport, though a Dominican low-cost carrier uses it as a base and some regional connections exist. Most passengers here are not connecting at all.
Worth knowing before you fly
Departures can be slow, so arrive early
The airport handles very large volumes of leisure traffic with simultaneous departure peaks, and the open-air terminals get hot. Three hours before an international departure is sensible rather than cautious.
Check where your resort actually is
The Punta Cana name is applied loosely along a long stretch of coast. Bávaro is close; Uvero Alto and Miches are considerably further. The difference is up to an hour each way.
Confirm the tourist card and entry form position
The Dominican Republic's tourist card has at times been bundled into airfares and at other times payable on arrival, alongside an electronic entry form. Check the current requirement rather than relying on a previous visit.
Terminal assignments, transit timetables and fares all change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip with the airport or transport operator before you travel.

How far is Punta Cana airport from the resorts?
Most Bávaro and Punta Cana resorts are fifteen to thirty-five minutes away. Resorts further up the coast at Uvero Alto or Miches can be forty-five to ninety minutes, so check your hotel's actual location.
Is Punta Cana airport air-conditioned?
Largely not. The terminals are deliberately open-sided with thatched roofs, which is part of the design rather than a fault. It is pleasant when moving and warm when queuing, so allow extra time and dress accordingly for departures.
