A short hop from the resorts, with an arrivals hall that needs a strategy
Puerto Vallarta's airport sits between the city and the resort strip, which makes transfers unusually short by Mexican resort standards. Most hotels in the main zone are ten to twenty minutes away.
The one thing worth preparing for is the arrivals hall. It is well known for aggressive timeshare and tour sales positioned between the customs exit and the doors, presented in a way that can be mistaken for official transport assistance.
Terminals and how they connect
Terminal A
Primarily domestic flights, along with some international services. The smaller of the two.
Terminal B
The main international terminal, handling most US and Canadian arrivals and departures. The two terminals are adjacent and walkable, though it is an outdoor walk rather than an internal corridor.
Getting into Puerto Vallarta
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Authorised taxi
10–25 minutes to the hotel zone or old town
Bought from a booth inside the terminal, fixed price by zone. Taxis are not permitted to pick up at the arrivals door in the usual way, so the booth is the route.
Pre-booked transfer
10–25 minutes
Most resorts arrange these and they are frequently included in a package. This is also the simplest way to avoid the sales floor, since the driver meets you outside.
Transfer to Nuevo Vallarta or Punta Mita
25–35 minutes to Nuevo Vallarta, 45–70 to Punta Mita
These are in the neighbouring state of Nayarit, north of the airport. Note that Nayarit has historically observed a different time zone from Jalisco, so confirm local time on arrival rather than assuming your phone has it right.
Connecting through PVR
Puerto Vallarta is a destination airport rather than a connecting one. Domestic connections onward are limited and mostly route through Mexico City or Guadalajara, so a missed flight here usually means a substantial wait.
Worth knowing before you fly
Walk past the desks in arrivals
Between customs and the exit you will pass staffed counters offering transport, tours and upgrades. Some are legitimate; many are timeshare presentations. Nothing you need is sold there. Keep walking to the official taxi booth or your pre-booked driver outside.
Check the time zone if you are staying in Nayarit
The state line north of the airport has historically also been a time zone boundary. Resorts in Nuevo Vallarta and Punta Mita may operate on a different clock from Puerto Vallarta itself, which matters for return flights.
Hurricane season runs through autumn
The Pacific season peaks between August and October. Flights are rarely cancelled outright, but heavy rain and occasional disruption are normal in that window and fares reflect it.
Terminal assignments, transit timetables and fares all change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip with the airport or transport operator before you travel.

How far is Puerto Vallarta airport from the hotel zone?
Very close by resort standards — ten to twenty-five minutes to most hotels in the main zone and the old town. Nuevo Vallarta is twenty-five to thirty-five minutes, and Punta Mita around an hour.
Are the people offering transport in arrivals official?
Some are, but many of the counters between customs and the exit are selling timeshare presentations or tours rather than transport. The authorised taxi booth sells fixed-price fares by zone, and a pre-booked transfer driver waits outside the building.
