SDQ — Las Américas International
The capital's airport, and three hours from the resorts most visitors book
Las Américas serves Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital, and it is the airport most people arriving to visit family use. The corridor from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Boston and Orlando is one of the busiest between the United States and the Caribbean.
It is emphatically not the airport for the eastern resorts. Punta Cana has its own airport around three hours away by road, and booking into the wrong one is the single most common and most expensive planning mistake on this route.
Terminals and how they connect
Single main terminal
One passenger terminal handling international traffic, with immigration and customs on arrival. The building is straightforward, though arrival halls can be slow when several wide-body flights land together.
Getting into Santo Domingo
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Authorised taxi
30–45 minutes to central Santo Domingo
The airport is around thirty kilometres east of the city. Official taxis operate at fixed rates by zone from a desk inside the terminal, which is preferable to negotiating in the arrivals hall.
Pre-booked transfer
30–45 minutes
Common for hotel arrivals and generally the smoothest option, particularly on a late-evening arrival.
Onward to Punta Cana or Bávaro
2.5–3.5 hours by road
Possible but long. If the eastern resorts are the destination, flying into Punta Cana instead is almost always the better decision.
Connecting through SDQ
Santo Domingo has grown as a connecting point between North and South America, particularly with the rise of a Dominican low-cost carrier using it as a hub. On a single ticket, connections are straightforward. On separate tickets you will clear immigration and customs and re-check bags, which needs three hours or more.
Worth knowing before you fly
Santo Domingo and Punta Cana are different airports
SDQ serves the capital; PUJ serves the eastern resort strip. They are around three hours apart. A cheaper fare into the wrong one is routinely wiped out by the transfer, and sometimes by considerably more.
There is a second, smaller Santo Domingo airport
La Isabela, coded JBQ, sits north of the city and handles domestic and short regional flights. It is a different airport from Las Américas and much closer to town.
Check the tourist card position
The Dominican Republic has at various points charged a tourist card fee, sometimes included in the airfare and sometimes payable on arrival, alongside an electronic entry form. Requirements have changed more than once, so confirm the current position before travelling.
