Two towns, two very different transfer times, and one busy arrivals hall
Los Cabos International serves two towns at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, and they are not equidistant. San José del Cabo is close; Cabo San Lucas is the better part of an hour further. Booking a hotel without checking which one it is in is the most common planning error here.
The airport is heavily oriented toward US leisure traffic, with strong service from Los Angeles, Dallas, Phoenix and the west generally, and it also draws a substantial domestic Mexican market.

Terminal 2
The main terminal for most US and Canadian services. The terminals are separate buildings connected by a shuttle rather than a walkway, so a change between them is a short ride rather than a stroll.
Getting into Los Cabos
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Pre-booked transfer or private shuttle

The most straightforward option, and the one that avoids the arrivals sales floor entirely because the driver waits outside.

Shared shuttle

Cheaper, but you wait for the vehicle to fill and then stop at other hotels. Reasonable value if you are not in a hurry and staying somewhere central.
Connecting through SJD
A destination airport rather than a connecting one. Domestic onward connections mostly route through Mexico City or Guadalajara and frequencies are moderate, so build in time rather than assuming a quick recovery from a delay.
Worth knowing before you fly
The arrivals hall sells timeshare
As at several Mexican resort airports, the walk from customs to the exit passes counters presenting themselves as transport or information desks. Many are timeshare pitches. Your transfer, if pre-booked, is outside the building.
Check which town your hotel is in
San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are around thirty kilometres apart with a resort corridor between them. Transfer time, cost and the character of the place are all different. Confirm before booking rather than after.
Rental cars are more useful here than at most resorts
The two towns and the corridor between them are spread out, and taxi fares add up quickly over a week. Be aware that Mexican law requires liability insurance issued in Mexico, which is not covered by most foreign policies or credit cards, so the quoted online rate is rarely the final one.

How far is Los Cabos airport from Cabo San Lucas?
Around forty-five to seventy minutes by road, depending on traffic through the corridor. San José del Cabo is much closer at twenty to thirty minutes. The difference is significant enough to factor into where you stay.
Do I need to rent a car in Los Cabos?
Not necessarily, but it helps if you plan to move between the two towns often. If you do rent, budget for Mexican liability insurance, which is legally required and generally not covered by foreign policies or credit card benefits, and which is usually added at the counter rather than in the online quote.
