Two towns, two very different transfer times, and one busy arrivals hall
Los Cabos International serves two towns at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, and they are not equidistant. San José del Cabo is close; Cabo San Lucas is the better part of an hour further. Booking a hotel without checking which one it is in is the most common planning error here.
The airport is heavily oriented toward US leisure traffic, with strong service from Los Angeles, Dallas, Phoenix and the west generally, and it also draws a substantial domestic Mexican market.

Terminal 1
Handles a mix of domestic and international flights.
Terminal 2
The main terminal for most US and Canadian services. The terminals are separate buildings connected by a shuttle rather than a walkway, so a change between them is a short ride rather than a stroll.
Getting into Los Cabos
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Pre-booked transfer or private shuttle

The most straightforward option, and the one that avoids the arrivals sales floor entirely because the driver waits outside.

Fixed price by zone from an official booth. Note that fares to Cabo San Lucas are considerably higher than to San José, reflecting the distance.
Shared shuttle
40–90 minutes depending on drop order
Cheaper, but you wait for the vehicle to fill and then stop at other hotels. Reasonable value if you are not in a hurry and staying somewhere central.
Connecting through SJD
A destination airport rather than a connecting one. Domestic onward connections mostly route through Mexico City or Guadalajara and frequencies are moderate, so build in time rather than assuming a quick recovery from a delay.
Worth knowing before you fly
The arrivals hall sells timeshare
As at several Mexican resort airports, the walk from customs to the exit passes counters presenting themselves as transport or information desks. Many are timeshare pitches. Your transfer, if pre-booked, is outside the building.
Check which town your hotel is in
San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are around thirty kilometres apart with a resort corridor between them. Transfer time, cost and the character of the place are all different. Confirm before booking rather than after.
Rental cars are more useful here than at most resorts
The two towns and the corridor between them are spread out, and taxi fares add up quickly over a week. Be aware that Mexican law requires liability insurance issued in Mexico, which is not covered by most foreign policies or credit cards, so the quoted online rate is rarely the final one.
Terminal assignments, transit timetables and fares all change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip with the airport or transport operator before you travel.
What the airline owes you on a departure from Los Cabos
Art. 47 Bis, section VEvery band below is owed only where the cause is attributable to the airline. Weather and air traffic restrictions fall outside it, which is the single thing most claims turn on.

- The statute obliges nothing yet.
- Over 1 hour, under 2 hours
- The airline's own compensation policy applies, as registered with PROFECO, with no statutory percentage floor.
- Over 2 hours, under 4 hours
- A discount of at least 7.5% of the ticket price, plus food, drink and access to calls or email.
- Over 4 hours, or cancelled
- Your choice: refund, the next available flight, or travel on a later date. Choose the refund or the later date and the airline owes indemnification of at least 25% of the ticket price on top, settled within 10 days.

Which rules reach a flight from here
SJD is outside the United States, so the US Department of Transportation rules we publish do not govern a departure from here on their own — they reach your itinerary when it touches the US. That is worth knowing here rather than academic: art. 47 Bis governs the departure itself, as set out above, and on a flight from here to the United States both regimes cover the same ticket at once. The Mexican indemnification and the DOT refund are separate claims, and the second one is the one travellers usually leave on the table.
Stated plainly because the alternative is worse: a page that quoted a § 259.5 commitment at somebody departing Los Cabos would be inventing a right they do not have, and they would find that out at the desk.

How far is Los Cabos airport from Cabo San Lucas?
Around forty-five to seventy minutes by road, depending on traffic through the corridor. San José del Cabo is much closer at twenty to thirty minutes. The difference is significant enough to factor into where you stay.
Do I need to rent a car in Los Cabos?
Not necessarily, but it helps if you plan to move between the two towns often. If you do rent, budget for Mexican liability insurance, which is legally required and generally not covered by foreign policies or credit card benefits, and which is usually added at the counter rather than in the online quote.
