Flights to Maldives
Landing at Velana is only half the journey
Almost everything that goes wrong with a Maldives trip goes wrong because people book it as one flight. You land at Velana International, on an island next to the capital, and your resort is then somewhere across an archipelago that stretches hundreds of kilometres. The second journey — by seaplane, domestic flight or speedboat — is arranged by the resort, is often a significant cost, and dictates when you can usably arrive.
Seaplanes only fly in daylight. That single constraint is behind most unhappy first nights here: a flight landing at 9pm cannot connect to a seaplane, so you either overnight near the airport at your own expense or lose a day. Choosing the arrival time to suit the transfer, rather than the fare, is the whole game.
Getting to Maldives
Airports
Velana International (MLE) sits on Hulhulé, joined to the capital Malé by a bridge, and handles essentially all international arrivals. Several domestic airports across the atolls take onward flights, and a few resorts have their own airstrips, but you will pass through MLE.
Flight time
There are no non-stop flights from the United States. The usual routings connect through the Gulf — Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi — or through Asia via Singapore, Colombo or Istanbul. From New York, expect 18 to 22 hours in total; from the West Coast, longer, and a second connection is common.
Into the city
Your resort transfer is the leg that matters. Speedboats serve nearby atolls and run at most hours, typically 20 minutes to over an hour. Seaplanes reach the further atolls in 20 to 50 minutes but operate only in daylight. Domestic flights plus a boat serve the far south. Confirm the transfer type, cost and last departure time with the resort before you commit to a flight.

Dry season, busiest
December to April
The northeast monsoon brings the calmest seas, clearest water and most reliable sun, which is why it is also the most expensive. Christmas and New Year are the sharpest peak of the year, and many resorts impose minimum stays over it.
Best value
May to November
The southwest monsoon means more cloud, occasional heavy squalls and choppier crossings — but also plenty of sunshine, noticeably lower rates and far fewer guests. Rain here tends to arrive hard and pass, rather than settle in for days.
Manta and whale shark season
Roughly May to November in Baa Atoll; year-round in the south
Plankton blooms driven by the monsoon bring mantas to known cleaning stations, and Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is the best-known site. If this is the reason for the trip, choose the atoll for the wildlife first and the resort second.

- Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR), but resorts bill in US dollars and cards are used for essentially everything. You are unlikely to need local cash unless you visit Malé or a local island.

- UTC+5 nationally, but many resorts run their clocks an hour ahead on so-called resort time to give guests more daylight. Check which time your transfer is quoted in.

- A free short-stay visa is generally issued on arrival to most nationalities, and an online Traveller Declaration is normally required shortly before you fly. Requirements change, so confirm current rules with Maldives Immigration.
- Local law
- The Maldives is a Muslim country. Alcohol is served at resorts but importing it is prohibited and it is not available on inhabited local islands, where modest dress is expected.

Worth sorting before you fly
Book the flight around the transfer, not the reverse
Ask the resort for the last seaplane departure and the transfer schedule before you buy a ticket. A morning or early-afternoon arrival at MLE gets you to the resort the same day; a late-evening arrival usually does not, and an unplanned airport-hotel night can cost more than the fare you saved.
The meal plan matters more than the room
On a private island there is nowhere else to eat, and the gap between bed-and-breakfast and full board over a week is substantial. Half board or all inclusive is often better value than it first appears once you price drinks and dinners at resort rates. Compare the total trip, not the nightly rate.
Pick the atoll for what you want to do
North and South Malé atolls are cheap to reach by speedboat and good for a short trip. Baa is for mantas. Ari is known for its reefs. The far south needs a domestic flight and suits longer stays. Distance from the airport is the main driver of transfer cost, so this decision shapes the budget as much as the hotel does.
Consider a local island for part of the trip
Guesthouses on inhabited islands cost a fraction of resort rates and offer a genuine sense of the country, with the trade-off that alcohol is unavailable and beachwear is limited to designated areas. A few nights local plus a few at a resort is an increasingly common way to make the trip affordable.
Watch the seaplane baggage limits
Seaplane operators run tighter weight allowances than the international carriers that brought you, and excess is charged at the counter. Check the figure before you pack rather than at the dock.

How do you get from Male airport to your resort?
The resort arranges it and you book it with them, not with the airline. Nearby islands are reached by speedboat, taking twenty minutes to an hour and running at most times of day. Further atolls need a seaplane, which takes twenty to fifty minutes but flies in daylight only. The far south usually means a domestic flight and then a boat. Confirm the type, the price and the last daily departure before you book your international ticket.
What happens if I land in the Maldives at night?
If your transfer is a seaplane, you will not fly that evening, because they do not operate after dark. Depending on the resort you either overnight at an airport hotel in Malé or at Hulhumalé at your own cost, or you wait for the morning flight and lose a day of your stay. Speedboat transfers are more forgiving. This is the main reason to compare arrival times rather than just fares on this route.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
December to April for the calmest seas and clearest water, at the highest prices and with Christmas and New Year the sharpest peak. May to November for materially better value with more cloud and passing squalls, and the best chance of mantas in Baa Atoll. There is no genuinely bad month; the trade-off is water clarity and sea state against cost and crowds.
