One terminal, piers rather than buildings, and a railway station underneath
Schiphol is the easiest of the large European hubs to connect through, and the reason is structural: it is one terminal building with piers radiating from it rather than a collection of separate buildings. There is no shuttle between terminals because there are no other terminals.
The other quiet advantage is the railway station directly beneath the terminal. You come down an escalator from arrivals onto a platform with direct trains into Amsterdam and across the Netherlands, with no shuttle and no separate airport rail fare structure.
Terminals and how they connect
One terminal, three departure halls
Halls 1, 2 and 3 are check-in areas within the same building rather than separate terminals. Once through security you are in one connected airside area.
Piers B to H
Gates are organised by pier letter. Piers are walkable from the central area, though the outer ones are a genuine fifteen-minute walk.
The Schengen split
Non-Schengen gates are separated from Schengen ones by passport control. Moving between the two areas mid-connection means a border check, which is the main variable in transfer time.
Getting between them
Everything is connected airside on foot. The distances are the only cost, and moving groups quickly is what the airport is designed for.
Getting into Amsterdam
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Train to Amsterdam Centraal
15 to 20 minutes
Direct from the station beneath the terminal, running very frequently including through much of the night. Comfortably the best option and cheap.
Taxi
20 to 40 minutes
Fixed-fare and metered options exist and both are expensive by comparison with the train. Sensible with a lot of luggage or a group, hard to justify otherwise.
Bus
30 to 40 minutes
Airport Express services run to parts of the city the train does not reach directly, including some hotel districts. Useful if your destination is away from Centraal.
Connecting through AMS
Schiphol is a good place to have a shorter connection, because there is no terminal transfer to go wrong. The variables are the walk to an outer pier and, if your two flights sit on opposite sides of the Schengen boundary, passport control. Neither is unpredictable in the way a shuttle bus between buildings is, which is why a tight connection here is a much safer bet than the same connection at Paris or London.

Check whether your connection crosses the Schengen boundary
Moving between Schengen and non-Schengen gates means passport control. It is well signposted and usually quick, but it is the step that consumes a tight connection.
Outer piers are a long walk
The airport is one building but not a small one. If your gate is at the far end of a pier, allow fifteen minutes from the central area.
Terminal assignments, transit timetables and fares all change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip with the airport or transport operator before you travel.

Is Schiphol easy to connect through?
It is among the easiest large hubs in Europe. How do I get from Schiphol to central Amsterdam?
