Northern Mexico's business gateway, closely tied to Texas
Monterrey is Mexico's industrial capital, and its airport reflects that: the traffic mix leans more toward business travel and less toward tourism than anywhere else in the country. The strongest international links are with Texas, which is a short hop away and closely connected commercially.
It is also the largest base for one of Mexico's two ultra low-cost carriers, which gives it more domestic frequency than a city of its size would otherwise support.
Terminals and how they connect
Terminal A
The main terminal, handling the majority of domestic and international flights. Immigration and customs for international arrivals are here.
Terminal B
A smaller separate building used by low-cost operations. It is a short distance from Terminal A rather than attached to it, so a change between the two is a walk outside or a short shuttle rather than an internal transfer.
Getting into Monterrey
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Authorised airport taxi
25–40 minutes to central Monterrey
Fixed-price by zone from a booth in the terminal. San Pedro Garza García, where most business travellers stay, is a similar distance and usually a little longer in traffic.
Ride-hailing
25–45 minutes
Well established in Monterrey and generally cheaper than the fixed-fare taxi, with designated pickup points at both terminals.
Car rental
Immediate, then 25–40 minutes
More useful here than at most Mexican airports. Monterrey is spread out, the road network is good, and a car makes sense if you are visiting industrial parks or heading out toward Saltillo.
Connecting through MTY
Most traffic here is point-to-point rather than connecting. If you do connect, check which terminal each flight uses, because A and B are separate buildings and a change between them means leaving and re-entering security. Within one terminal an hour is comfortable; between them, allow two.
Worth knowing before you fly
The Texas links are short-haul and frequent
Flights to Houston, Dallas and San Antonio are short enough that the airport time dominates the journey. Arriving earlier rather than later is worth more here than shaving the connection.
It gets hot
Monterrey summers are severe, regularly well above 35°C. If you are renting a car or waiting outside for a pickup, that is worth planning around rather than discovering.

How far is Monterrey airport from the city centre?
Around twenty-four kilometres northeast, typically twenty-five to forty minutes by road. There is no rail connection, so taxi, ride-hailing or a rental car are the options.
Are Terminals A and B connected at Monterrey airport?
They are separate buildings a short distance apart rather than a single connected structure. Moving between them means going outside and re-clearing security, so allow real time if your connection involves both.
