The rare airport where a long layover is an asset
Changi is consistently rated among the best airports in the world, and the reason is that it was designed on the assumption that people would spend hours in it. Gardens, a cinema, swimming, transit hotels and the Jewel complex with its indoor waterfall mean a six-hour connection here is a genuinely different experience from six hours anywhere else.
Practically, it is four terminals, three of which are closely linked and one which is not. Knowing which you are in is the only real planning required.
Terminals and how they connect
Terminals 1, 2 and 3
Linked both behind security by the Skytrain and on the public side by walkways through Jewel. Moving between them is easy and takes minutes, which makes most connections here straightforward.
Terminal 4
Separate, and reached by a shuttle bus rather than the Skytrain. A connection involving Terminal 4 needs meaningfully more time than one among the other three.
Jewel
A retail and garden complex attached to Terminal 1 on the public side, containing the indoor waterfall. It is landside, so visiting it means leaving the secure area — fine on a long layover if your onward arrangements allow, but not something to attempt on a tight connection.
Getting into Singapore
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
MRT East West Line
45 to 55 minutes to the city centre
From stations at Terminals 2 and 3, with a change at Tanah Merah. Very cheap, clean and dependable. Stops running around midnight.
Taxi
20 to 35 minutes
Metered with an airport surcharge, and inexpensive by the standards of comparable cities. Well organised ranks and the obvious choice late at night or with luggage.
Ride-hailing
20 to 35 minutes
Widely used from designated pickup points. Usually similar to a taxi in cost, occasionally higher during peaks.
Airport shuttle and buses
40 to 80 minutes
Shared shuttles serve city hotels for a fixed fare per person, and public buses run cheaply but with limited luggage space.
Connecting through SIN
Among Terminals 1, 2 and 3 this is about as easy as large-airport connecting gets: the Skytrain runs inside security, transfers are well signed, and an hour to ninety minutes is comfortable. Terminal 4 is the exception, needing a shuttle bus and more time. Changi also does something unusual in placing security screening at individual gates rather than at a central checkpoint in some terminals, which means you should be at the gate earlier than you might expect and cannot easily leave once through.
Worth knowing before you fly
Gate screening changes your timing
Where security is at the gate rather than centrally, arriving at the gate late leaves no margin at all, and once inside the gate hold area there is usually no coming back out for food or a toilet. Get there earlier than instinct suggests.
A long layover is worth planning for, not enduring
Transit hotels by the hour, free tours for qualifying connections, gardens, showers and a pool make a six or eight hour wait genuinely pleasant. Look up what your connection qualifies for before you land rather than wandering the terminal.
Singapore's laws are strictly enforced
Penalties for drugs are severe, and rules about what may be brought into the country — including certain tobacco products and chewing gum — are enforced in practice, not just on paper. Read the customs guidance rather than assuming it is nominal.
Terminal assignments, transit timetables and fares all change. Confirm the details that matter to your trip with the airport or transport operator before you travel.

How do you get from Changi to central Singapore?
The MRT East West Line from Terminals 2 and 3 reaches the city centre in 45 to 55 minutes with a change at Tanah Merah, and costs very little. Taxis are metered with an airport surcharge and take 20 to 35 minutes, which is inexpensive compared with most major cities and the sensible option late at night or with luggage.
