Singapore is the rare destination where the airport is genuinely part of the appeal. Changi is consistently ranked among the best anywhere, and arriving there after a very long flight is a markedly gentler experience than most long-haul arrivals.
The flight itself is the hard part. Routes from the US east coast are among the longest scheduled services operating anywhere, and planning around that — cabin choice, arrival time, first day expectations — matters more than picking a season, because Singapore's weather barely changes across the year.
Getting to Singapore
Airports
Changi (SIN) is the single airport, east of the city. Terminals 1 to 3 are linked by the free Skytrain and by walkways; Terminal 4 sits apart and is reached by shuttle bus, which is the one connection that needs extra time.
Flight time
Roughly 19h 35m non-stop from New York, around 18h from Los Angeles, and about 17h 25m from San Francisco. These are among the longest commercial flights operating, and one-stop routings through a Gulf or East Asian hub are frequently competitive.
Into the city
The MRT reaches the city in about 30 minutes for a very low fare, changing once at Tanah Merah. Taxis take 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and are metered with published surcharges, so the cost is predictable.

The northeast monsoon brings the heaviest and most sustained rain. It rarely stops a day outright, but afternoon downpours are frequent and heavy enough to reshape plans.

Slightly less rain and the most comfortable conditions such as they are. July also coincides with the northern summer holidays, which lifts demand on flights.

Worth sorting before you fly
Think about the cabin, not just the fare
On a flight approaching nineteen hours, the difference between economy and premium economy changes the trip more than it changes the budget for many travellers. This is the route where that upgrade is easiest to justify.
Submit the arrival card before you fly
The electronic arrival declaration must be completed within a set window before arrival. Doing it at the airport on landing is possible but adds friction at exactly the wrong moment.
A long layover here is not wasted time
Changi has gardens, a cinema, swimming and the Jewel complex attached. If your itinerary offers a longer connection in Singapore against a tight one elsewhere, this is one of the few airports where the longer option is genuinely preferable.

Singapore enforces regulations that surprise visitors, including a ban on the import and sale of chewing gum and strict rules on vaping products and certain medications. Check anything you would normally carry without thinking.

When is the best time to visit Singapore?
Any month works, which is unusual. The temperature is near-constant all year, so the only real variable is rainfall, and even the wettest months rarely produce all-day rain. February to April is marginally drier and more comfortable. Choosing dates on fare and availability rather than weather is a perfectly sound approach here.
How long is the flight to Singapore from the US?
Non-stop from New York is roughly nineteen and a half hours, among the longest scheduled flights operating anywhere. From Los Angeles it is around eighteen hours and from San Francisco about seventeen and a half. One-stop routings through a Gulf or East Asian hub add total travel time but split the journey, which some travellers prefer on a flight of this length.
Is Singapore worth a stopover rather than a full trip?
It works well as both, which is why it appears on so many itineraries to Southeast Asia and Australia. Three to four days covers the city comfortably. As a stopover of a day or two on a longer journey it is unusually easy, because the airport is fast to clear and the MRT gets you into the city in half an hour.
Is Changi a good airport to connect through?
It is one of the best. Terminals 1 to 3 are linked airside by Skytrain and walkways, so most connections are straightforward. The exception is Terminal 4, which is reached by shuttle bus and needs more time. As with any connection, the thing to check is whether both flights are on one ticket, because that determines who is responsible if the first leg is delayed.
