A Mexican airport you can walk to from San Diego, and the fare difference that makes it worth it
Tijuana is an ordinary Mexican domestic airport with one extraordinary feature: a pedestrian bridge connecting it directly to a terminal on the United States side of the border. Cross Border Xpress, usually called CBX, is a covered walkway from Otay Mesa in San Diego County straight into the departure area at TIJ.
The reason it matters is arithmetic. A flight from Tijuana to Guadalajara, León or Los Cabos is a domestic Mexican service, priced by Mexican low-cost carriers. The same journey from a Southern California airport is an international flight priced accordingly. The gap is frequently large enough to dwarf the cost of the bridge, which is why the crossing has handled tens of millions of passengers since it opened.
Tijuana also serves more destinations within Mexico than San Diego does, and operates around the clock, so the schedule is often better as well as cheaper.
Terminals and how they connect
The main terminal
A single passenger terminal handling domestic flights across Mexico plus a small number of international services. It is a straightforward building; the complexity here is the border, not the layout.
The CBX terminal and bridge
On the US side, a separate terminal building in Otay Mesa with airline check-in counters and parking. The bridge itself is an enclosed walkway around 120 metres long. You clear Mexican immigration inside the crossing and emerge in the secure area of the Tijuana terminal, which is why it functions as part of the airport rather than as a border post.
Getting into Tijuana
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
CBX bridge to San Diego
15–40 minutes to cross, then 20–40 minutes to central San Diego
Restricted to ticketed air passengers. A separate bridge ticket is required, bought online, in the app, at a kiosk, or bundled into the airfare by some airlines. Parking is available on the US side.
Taxi into Tijuana
15–30 minutes to central Tijuana
If Tijuana itself is the destination rather than a waypoint, authorised taxis operate from the terminal in the usual way.
Connecting through TIJ
Tijuana is not a connecting hub in the usual sense; the connection here is between a US road journey and a Mexican flight. Arrive at the CBX terminal at least two to three hours before departure at busy times. Weekend mornings and Mexican holiday periods produce queues at the crossing that are considerably longer than the walk suggests.
Worth knowing before you fly
The timing rules are strict
Departing passengers may cross within a set window before their flight, generally up to twenty-four hours. Arriving passengers must cross within a much shorter window after landing and before leaving the baggage area. Missing that window means using the ordinary land border instead, which is a completely different experience.
Bring the right documents
You need a valid passport, your boarding pass and a CBX ticket. Mexico's tourist card requirements depend on how long you are staying and have moved toward a digital process at major airports. Confirm current requirements with the airline or Mexican immigration rather than relying on a previous trip.
Book the flight with the crossing included where you can
Some airlines sell an itinerary using a code that bundles the flight and the bridge together. That is usually simpler than buying the two separately, and it removes the risk of turning up with one and not the other.
The return journey is the bigger saving
The land border crossing back into the United States at San Ysidro is one of the busiest in the world and waits can run to hours. CBX bypasses it entirely, which for many travellers is worth more than the fare difference.
