On the routes that matter most to travellers in the United States it is frequently the market leader rather than an alternative — on Los Angeles to Guadalajara, one of the busiest international routes in the entire US market, Volaris carries roughly half of all traffic.
The fare model is genuinely unbundled. The advertised price buys a seat and a personal item, and cabin bags, checked bags, seat selection and changes are all priced separately. Understood on those terms it is often dramatically cheaper than a full-service carrier on the same route. Booked on the assumption that a carry-on is included, it frequently is not cheaper at all.
The airline is also the reason the Tijuana option exists for travellers in Southern California. Volaris operates a large domestic network from TIJ, which is reachable on foot from San Diego across a dedicated bridge, and domestic Mexican fares from Tijuana are often a fraction of the international fare for the same destination from a US airport.

How Volaris baggage works
A personal item that fits under the seat is included. A full-size cabin bag for the overhead bin is a paid extra on the cheapest fares, which is the single most important structural fact about the airline and the one that catches first-time passengers.
The personal item allowance is measured, and more consistently than at most carriers, because whether it fits determines whether a fee applies. A bag genuinely within the stated dimensions avoids the conversation entirely; one that is slightly over does not.
Bags cost less added at booking than at check-in, and less at check-in than at the airport. Bundles combining bags, seat and flexibility are frequently cheaper than buying the same items individually, so it is worth pricing the bundle before adding extras one at a time.
Check-in
Online check-in is the cheaper path; airport counter check-in can attract a charge at some airports. Doing it in the app before leaving for the airport is the default assumption of the model.
Cutoffs are enforced tightly and there is little scope for accommodation. With no alliance and few interline agreements, a missed flight generally means buying a new ticket rather than being moved to the next departure.
Boarding
Boarding is by group, with priority sold as an extra. Because full-size cabin bags are paid for, fewer passengers carry one and the overhead scramble is milder than on a full-service carrier.
Gate staff check bag sizes against a sizer. This is not arbitrary enforcement — the fee structure depends on it — so the sizer rather than previous experience is what decides.
Before you fly Volaris
v.club and Altitude are different things
v.club is a paid discount membership that unlocks lower fares for the member and companions, and it only pays for itself if you fly the airline several times a year. Altitude is the separate frequent flyer programme. Neither is a baggage allowance, and joining one does not change what your bag costs.
Flying via Tijuana can change the arithmetic entirely
For travellers in Southern California, crossing to Tijuana airport on the Cross Border Xpress bridge converts an international flight into a domestic Mexican one, and Volaris has the largest network there. The saving on interior destinations such as Guadalajara, León or Los Cabos is often substantial, at the cost of a bridge fee and a border crossing.
Price the whole trip before comparing
Add the bags and seats you will actually use, then compare against Aeroméxico's all-in fare. On a personal-item-only trip Volaris usually wins comfortably. With two checked bags and seat selection for a family, the gap narrows and sometimes closes.

Not from San Diego airport, but Volaris operates a large network from Tijuana, which is connected to a terminal on the San Diego side by the Cross Border Xpress pedestrian bridge. You clear Mexican immigration inside the bridge and walk into the departure area at TIJ. For destinations in the Mexican interior this is often much cheaper than flying internationally from a US airport.
