Mexico's second city, and one of the busiest air corridors to the United States
Guadalajara is where several things people think of as generically Mexican actually come from: mariachi, tequila and charrería all have their roots in Jalisco. It is a large, confident city with a colonial centre, and it has become a serious technology hub as well.
It is also connected to the United States more heavily than almost any other Mexican city. The route to Los Angeles alone carries over a million passengers a year, driven by decades of migration between Jalisco and California, which means fares and airport queues both spike hard around family holidays.
Getting to Guadalajara
Airports
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (GDL) is about 17 km southeast of the centre. One main terminal handles everything, with a second under construction to add capacity, so access roads and parking change periodically.
Flight time
Roughly 3h 20m non-stop from Los Angeles, about 4h from Chicago, near 2h 30m from Houston and around 2h 45m from Dallas.
Into the city
There is no rail link. Authorised taxis sell fixed fares by zone from a booth inside the terminal, taking 25 to 45 minutes. Ride-hailing is widely used and generally cheaper, from a designated pickup area. A public bus runs toward the city cheaply but slowly.

Best balance
October to May
Dry, warm during the day and cool in the evening. This is the long comfortable window, and the reason so many people describe Guadalajara's climate as close to perfect.
Rainy season
June to September
Heavy afternoon storms most days, clearing to bright evenings. The countryside around the city is at its greenest and demand is lower, but a rain plan for late afternoon is worth having.
Peak demand
December, Easter week, mid-summer
Not a weather season but the one that affects fares most. Family travel from California and the Midwest concentrates in these windows and prices reflect it, so book well ahead if you are travelling then.

Worth sorting before you fly
Tequila is a genuine day trip
The town that gave the drink its name is about an hour away through agave fields, and the distillery tours there are the real thing rather than a tourist construction. A tour bus or train service runs from the city, which removes the driving question entirely.
Tlaquepaque and Tonalá for crafts
Both are effectively part of the metropolitan area rather than separate trips. Tlaquepaque is the polished one with galleries and courtyards; Tonalá is the working market where much of it is made.
Consider flying via Tijuana
If you are starting in Southern California, a domestic Mexican flight from Tijuana is often far cheaper than the international fare, and the Cross Border Xpress bridge from San Diego makes it practical. Worth pricing before booking the obvious routing.
Book early around the holidays
December and Easter on the US routes are among the most heavily booked periods in the Mexican network. Fares rise months out and the airport is at its busiest, so allow extra time as well as extra budget.

How far is Guadalajara airport from the city?
About 17 kilometres southeast, typically 25 to 45 minutes by road. There is no train, so taxi, ride-hailing or bus are the options.
Is it cheaper to fly to Guadalajara via Tijuana?
Frequently, because a Tijuana–Guadalajara flight is domestic rather than international and is priced by Mexican low-cost carriers. From San Diego you reach Tijuana airport on foot across the Cross Border Xpress bridge. Compare the total including the bridge ticket before deciding.
When is the best time to visit Guadalajara?
October to May is dry and comfortable. June to September brings heavy afternoon storms that clear by evening. Fares peak around December and Easter regardless of weather because of family travel from the United States.
