Guadalajara handles one of the highest-volume international corridors in the entire US market. The route between here and Los Angeles carries over a million passengers a year, more than most transatlantic city pairs, and it is driven overwhelmingly by people visiting family rather than by tourism.
The airport has been operating beyond its comfortable capacity for years, with a second terminal under construction to relieve it. Until that fully opens, expect a single busy building where the queues at peak times are the main variable in how long anything takes.
Terminals and how they connect
Terminal 1
The main building, handling both domestic and international flights. Domestic and international departures are separated within it, and the international arrivals hall funnels everyone through immigration and customs in one place, which is where the queues form.
The expansion
A second terminal has been under construction to add capacity, and works around the existing building change access routes and parking periodically. Check where your airline is operating from close to the day rather than relying on a previous visit.
Getting into Guadalajara
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Authorised airport taxi
25–45 minutes to central Guadalajara
Bought from a booth inside the terminal at a fixed price by zone. This is the default and the most straightforward option, and the fixed fare removes any discussion about the route.
Ride-hailing
25–45 minutes
Widely used and generally cheaper than the fixed-fare taxi. Pickup is from a designated area rather than directly outside arrivals, and the walk is signposted.
Bus
50–80 minutes
A public service runs toward the city and is very cheap, but it is slow, involves a connection for most destinations and is awkward with luggage. It suits a light traveller on a budget rather than a family arriving with bags.
Connecting through GDL
Guadalajara is a secondary hub for the Mexican low-cost carriers rather than a major connecting airport, so most passengers here are starting or ending their journey. If you are connecting, the single terminal keeps it simple, but an international arrival connecting onward means clearing immigration and customs first and then re-entering security. Ninety minutes is workable; an hour is not, particularly at peak.
Worth knowing before you fly
The Los Angeles route is busy in both directions at holidays
Demand on the US routes spikes hard around Christmas, Easter and the summer, and both fares and airport queues follow. If you are travelling in those windows, book early and arrive earlier than you otherwise would.
Tequila and Tlaquepaque are day trips from here
The town of Tequila is roughly an hour from the airport by road, and Tlaquepaque, known for its crafts, is much closer to the city. If either is the actual destination, arranging transport directly rather than going into central Guadalajara first can save a considerable detour.
Consider the Tijuana alternative on domestic legs
If you are coming from Southern California, a domestic Mexican flight from Tijuana to Guadalajara is frequently much cheaper than the international fare from a US airport. The Cross Border Xpress bridge makes that practical from San Diego.

How far is Guadalajara airport from the city?
Around seventeen kilometres southeast of the centre, which is twenty-five to forty-five minutes by road depending on traffic. There is no rail link, so every option is a road journey.

Is it cheaper to fly to Guadalajara from Tijuana?
