The detail that surprises first-time visitors is geography. The airport sits well outside the capital and considerably closer to the Pacific coast, so if the surf beaches rather than the city are the point of the trip, you can be there before you would have reached San Salvador.

El Salvador International (SAL) is around 40 to 50 km from the capital, with a single passenger terminal handling all traffic.

Roughly 4h 45m non-stop from Los Angeles, about 4h 30m from Washington, near 3h from Houston and around 5h from New York.
Into the city
Forty-five to seventy minutes to San Salvador by road. The Pacific beaches at El Tunco and along the Costa del Sol are only twenty to forty minutes away.

Worth sorting before you fly
Consider going straight to the coast
El Tunco and the Costa del Sol are closer to the airport than the capital is. If the beaches are the trip, booking the first night there rather than in San Salvador saves an hour and a half of driving on each end.
No currency exchange needed
El Salvador uses the US dollar as legal tender. Cash remains useful outside the capital, where card acceptance is patchier.
The country is small enough for one base
The coast, the western highlands and the volcanoes are all within a couple of hours of each other. Unlike its neighbours, El Salvador can be seen properly from a single base with day trips.
Book early around the holidays
December and Easter fares on the US routes rise months out because of family travel, and the airport is at its busiest. This is the single biggest lever on the cost of the trip.
