San Salvador's airport is the largest Central American market for travel to and from the United States, and the traffic is driven overwhelmingly by Salvadoran communities in Los Angeles, Washington, Houston and New York rather than by tourism. The route map tracks where people's families are.
It also functions as a genuine connecting hub for the region, inherited from the airline network that was built here before merging into its current owner. Flights across Central America and into South America connect through it.
The one practical thing to know before arriving is the distance. The airport is well outside the city, considerably further than most capital-city airports, and the transfer is a real journey rather than a short hop.
Terminals and how they connect
Single terminal
One passenger terminal handling all traffic, with international arrivals clearing immigration and customs in the usual way. It has been progressively expanded as traffic has grown, and it is straightforward to navigate.
Getting into San Salvador
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.
Taxi or pre-booked transfer
45–70 minutes to San Salvador
The airport is around forty to fifty kilometres from the city, so this is a genuine road journey. Use the official taxi desk inside the terminal or arrange a transfer in advance rather than negotiating outside.
Transfer to the coast
20–40 minutes to the Costa del Sol and surf beaches
The airport is actually closer to the Pacific coast than to the capital, which is convenient if the beaches rather than the city are the destination.
Connecting through SAL
As a regional hub, connections here are routine and generally handled airside on a single ticket, with bags checked through. Allow more time if you are arriving from the United States and connecting onward to a country that requires you to clear and re-enter, and considerably more on separate tickets.
Worth knowing before you fly
The US routes peak hard around holidays
December, Easter and the August summer window see demand spike sharply on the routes from Los Angeles, Washington, Houston and New York. Fares rise well in advance and the airport is at its busiest, so book early and allow extra time.
El Salvador uses the US dollar
The country adopted the dollar as legal tender, which removes any currency exchange question for travellers arriving from the United States.
The beaches are closer than the capital
If your trip is oriented toward the Pacific coast rather than San Salvador itself, you can be at the beach well before you would have reached the city.

SAL is outside the United States, so the US Department of Transportation rules we publish do not govern a departure from here on their own — they reach your itinerary when it touches the US. We have not built the local regime for this country, and we will not describe rights we have not read. If your itinerary departs the EU, EU 261 is the instrument to look up; from the UK it is the retained version enforced by the CAA, which pays in sterling rather than euros. Both are more generous than the US floor rather than less.
Stated plainly because the alternative is worse: a page that quoted a § 259.5 commitment at somebody departing San Salvador would be inventing a right they do not have, and they would find that out at the desk.
