Puerto Rico is a United States territory, which changes the arithmetic of a Caribbean trip entirely for anyone travelling from the mainland. There is no passport requirement, no immigration queue on arrival, no customs declaration in the usual sense, and mobile phones generally work on domestic plans.
San Juan's airport is the busiest in the Caribbean and functions both as the gateway to Puerto Rico and as a connecting point for the wider region. For a traveller who wants the Caribbean without the international-travel overhead, it is difficult to beat.

Connected terminal concourses
The airport is arranged as a set of lettered concourses within a broadly connected structure. Moving between most of them is a walk rather than a shuttle, which makes connections here more straightforward than at many airports of comparable size.
Getting into San Juan
Times below are realistic ranges rather than best cases. Rail journeys keep to a timetable; road journeys do not, and treating the two the same is how people miss flights.

Worth it if you intend to leave the San Juan area for El Yunque, the west coast or the south. Public transport outside the capital is limited, and a US driving licence is valid.
Connecting through SJU
San Juan is a substantial connecting point for the eastern Caribbean, with onward flights to the Virgin Islands, the Lesser Antilles and beyond. Because most mainland traffic is domestic, connections avoid the immigration step that would apply elsewhere in the region, which keeps required connection times shorter.
Worth knowing before you fly
No passport needed from the mainland US
Puerto Rico is a US territory, so travel from the fifty states is domestic. A passport is not required, though a REAL ID-compliant licence or other acceptable identification is. Travellers from other countries need whatever US entry documentation would normally apply.
The dollar and US mobile plans work here
The currency is the US dollar and most US mobile plans treat Puerto Rico as domestic. It removes a set of frictions that apply everywhere else in the Caribbean.
Hurricane season shapes the calendar
The Atlantic season runs from June to November, peaking around September. Fares are lowest then for a reason, and travel insurance is worth more in that window than at other times of year.

Will you make your connection at SJU?
